    A website name has to work twice, once as a name a person can say and once as a hostname the DNS will accept, and most naming tools only help with the first. This page generates candidates and then states the rules that decide whether a candidate can exist at all.

    What is a website name generator?

    A website name generator is a tool that produces candidate names for a site from a keyword, a topic or a tone. The useful ones narrow the field; none of them can make the decision, because the decision depends on facts the tool cannot see.

    Three different things get called the website’s name, and only one of them is governed by anything. The domain name is the registered string that DNS resolves, and it is the only one that can be refused. The site title is display text in the browser tab and the header, and no protocol governs it at all: it can carry spaces, punctuation and any script you like. The page name, or slug, is the part of the address after the host, and it follows URL rules rather than DNS rules, which are more permissive. Everything below is about the domain name unless it says otherwise, because that is the one with rules attached.

    The same tool gets called a website name maker, a site name generator and a website name builder, and the difference between those labels is marketing rather than function. What separates one from another is whether it tells you why a candidate fails.

    How does this website name generator build a name?

    It asks a language model for candidates in the tone you pick, returns ten at a time, and caches each tone so pressing the button again on a tone you have already seen costs nothing and happens instantly. The canonical set refreshes on a cadence of roughly three and a half days, which is why the page’s date moves.

    Two things it does not do, stated plainly because every competing tool claims at least one of them. It does not check whether a name is registered. It does not check whether a matching social handle is free. Neither check can be done by a language model, which has no live connection to a registry, a trademark database or a social platform. You perform the first at any registrar’s search box and the second on the platform itself, and both take seconds once you have a shortlist.

    One rule it does enforce. Every name it returns is a valid DNS label as typed: letters, digits and interior hyphens only, first and last characters alphanumeric, inside the length limit stated below.     How long can a website name be?

    One label, meaning one segment between the dots, is capped at 63 characters, and the whole name is capped at 253 characters as you type it. Those are two different limits on two different things, and conflating them is the single most common error on this topic.

    Both come from the same document. RFC 1035, “Domain Names, Implementation and Specification”, written by P. Mockapetris and published in November 1987, lists the size limits in section 2.3.4: labels are 63 octets or less, and names are 255 octets or less. Section 2.3.1 states the label figure again in plainer words, that labels must be 63 characters or less.

    The 253 is arithmetic on the RFC’s own number, and the document supplies the reason rather than leaving it to be inferred. Section 3.1 states that the total length of a domain name is restricted to 255 octets or less, and its own parenthetical says what the 255 counts: label octets and label length octets. The same section explains the encoding, that each label is preceded by a one octet length field and that the name is terminated by a length byte of zero. Those two extra octets are why the longest name a person can actually type is 255 minus 2, which is 253.

    Two of the pages that rank for this query state the 63 and attach it to the wrong thing, telling the reader it is the limit on their domain name rather than on one segment of it. A reader who believes that has a number they cannot use, because it is roughly four times too small for the name and far too large for the label.

    This page does not state a minimum length. One ranking registrar gives a range beginning at one character, but names no source, and no registry document confirming a floor was read during the research for this page, so the figure is left out rather than repeated softly.

    None of this is the practical constraint. Readable names stop well short of 63 characters, and the reason is legibility rather than enforcement: the name has to be typed from memory by someone who only heard it said once.

    Which characters can a website name contain?

    Letters, digits and hyphens, with the hyphen allowed only in the interior. RFC 1035 section 2.3.1 states that labels must start with a letter, end with a letter or digit, and have as interior characters only letters, digits, and hyphen, and the same section gives the rule in formal notation, which is where the restriction against a leading or trailing hyphen comes from.

    One part of that was relaxed two years later. RFC 1123, “Requirements for Internet Hosts, Application and Support”, edited by R. Braden and published in October 1989, states in section 2.1 that the restriction on the first character is relaxed to allow either a letter or a digit, and that host software must support the more liberal syntax.

    So a generated candidate fails on any of the following:

    • Spaces between words
    • Underscores anywhere in the label
    • Ampersands, apostrophes or commas
    • Accented characters in their original form
    • Hyphens at the beginning or the end

    This is where a company name and a web address part company. A registered company name can contain an ampersand, an apostrophe and spaces, and a hostname can contain none of them, which is why the legal name and the address so often cannot match. If the name you are choosing is the company’s rather than the site’s, the constraints that bind it are legal rather than protocol, and naming the company rather than the site is a different problem with a different rulebook.

    Do capital letters change a website name?

    No. Capitals are display only. RFC 1035 section 2.3.3 states that all comparisons between character strings, and the document names labels and domain names among them, are done in a case-insensitive manner. Section 2.3.1 puts it even more directly: no significance is attached to the case, and two names with the same spelling but different case are to be treated as if identical.

    That has one genuinely useful consequence. Capitalising a compound to show a reader where the two words split helps them read it on a poster or in an email signature, and it changes nothing about where the request goes. The name in this page’s groups is the same label whether you print it with capitals or without.

    How is a name in another script stored?

    As ASCII, behind a four character prefix. A name written in a non-Latin script is converted before it reaches the DNS, and the converted form is what gets stored, typed and copied when software will not render the original.

    RFC 3492, the Punycode specification written by A. Costello and published in March 2003, describes Punycode as a transfer encoding syntax that uniquely and reversibly transforms a Unicode string into an ASCII string. RFC 5890, written by J. Klensin and published in August 2010, states that every A-label begins with the prefix xn-- followed by a string that is valid Punycode output, and hence a maximum of 59 ASCII characters in length.

    That 59 is not an arbitrary figure, and RFC 5890 gives the subtraction itself: because no DNS label may exceed 63 octets, and the prefix spends four of them, the encoded remainder is limited to 59. The practical point for somebody choosing a name is that a name in a non-Latin script has a second appearance its owner never designed, and that second form is the one that turns up in a pasted link.

    What if the website name you want is already taken?

    There are four moves, and the one most people skip is the first. The obvious name being gone is the normal starting condition for naming a website, not a failure of the process, and every tool on this subject answers this question in a single line.

    1. Buy it from whoever holds it. Most people never ask. A domain broker writing on Hacker News in 2013 argued that startups shoot themselves in the foot by assuming everything is taken, and put a typical negotiated figure in the range of two to five thousand dollars. That is one broker’s estimate from that year and not a market rate, but the move is real and costs nothing to explore.
    2. Rebuild the name. Add a specific qualifier or reverse the word order, which is what the last group above is built from. The test is spoken rather than visual: say the new name to someone and see whether they can type it.
    3. Take a different extension. The trade-off is about your audience rather than about the technology. Choosing an alternative extension is a bet that the people you want will notice and not mind, and that bet is safer with a technical audience than a general one.
    4. Accept a hyphen. Placed last deliberately. A hyphen is legal in the interior of a label, as the character rules above state, and its cost is that it has to be spoken aloud every single time the address is given out. Nothing on this page claims a hyphen harms rankings, because no source for that claim was confirmed.

    Should a website name be a real word or an invented one?

    Neither wins, and the real choice is between two different costs. The tool ranking first for this query argues one side of it: Namelix’s own page states that most business name generators combine dictionary words to make longer names, and offers short branded names as the alternative, on the reasoning that short domains are expensive while longer multi-word names do not inspire confidence.

    The cost of the invented name is not that it looks odd. It is that a listener cannot reconstruct the spelling from the sound, so the name breaks at the moment it is spoken rather than typed. A commenter on Hacker News put it exactly that way about the retailer Vastrm, saying they did not know whether it was vastrem or vastrim, and that even knowing, they would have to spell it out for anyone else.

    The counter-case is just as real, and it comes from the same place. A commenter in 2014 pointed out that Camarades.com was an instant hit while being very hard to spell, that Google was a misspelling of googol before it was a brand, and that Facebook is a blunt juxtaposition of two unrelated words. Hard-to-spell names have succeeded repeatedly.

    So the honest output is a test rather than a verdict: say the candidate to somebody, ask them to type it, and the gap between what you said and what they typed is the price of that name. A short gap makes an invented name safe. A wide one means you will spend the life of the site spelling it.

    How do you choose between website name candidates?

    Five checks, ordered so the cheapest failure comes first. This is the reverse of the order every ranking tool uses, and the ordering is the point: four of the five cost nothing and can be run on a shortlist in a few minutes.

    1. Does it obey the character rules? A candidate with a space, an underscore or an edge hyphen cannot be a label, so it fails for free and in seconds.
    2. Can a listener spell it after hearing it once? Tested on a person, not guessed at by you, because you already know the spelling.
    3. Is it clear what the site does, or is the name carrying that alone? Either answer is fine, as long as it is deliberate.
    4. Is it free of an obvious trademark collision? The next section defines what a collision actually means.
    5. Is the domain available? Last, because it is the only one of the five that resets completely the moment you change a character.

    Availability leads on every competing page and in Google’s own summary of this query, and it belongs at the end. A name that fails the first four is not worth checking, and a name that fails only the fifth can often be rebuilt in a minute.

    Three things worth holding while you sort a shortlist:

    • Keep it far below the limit: the enforced cap is 63 characters for a label, and a readable website name rarely passes 16.
    • Test it out loud, not on screen: read the candidate to one person and have them type it back before you register anything.
    • Check availability last: it is the only check that a single changed letter invalidates entirely.

    Can a website name infringe a trademark?

    Yes, and the mechanism is a policy every accredited registrar has adopted rather than a court case. ICANN’s Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy, adopted on 26 August 1999 with its implementation documents approved on 24 October 1999, and read for this page on 12 September 2026, sets out what a complainant has to establish.

    Paragraph 4(a) names three elements, and the policy states that the complainant must prove that each of the three is present: that the domain name is identical or confusingly similar to a trademark or service mark in which the complainant has rights, that the holder has no rights or legitimate interests in respect of the domain name, and that the domain name has been registered and is being used in bad faith.

    The remedy is narrow and specific. Paragraph 4(i) states that the remedies available to a complainant are limited to requiring the cancellation of the domain name or the transfer of the registration to the complainant. Paragraph 2 puts the duty on the holder in one sentence: it is your responsibility to determine whether your domain name registration infringes or violates someone else’s rights.

    The consequence is worth stating plainly, because it is the part people feel without being able to name it. A website name can pass every check on this page and still be lost years later. A commenter describing the collision between SparkFun and Sparc in 2009 made the same point from experience, that you can think you are in the clear and an established company can assert a conflict years afterwards. Nothing here is legal advice, and this page sets no threshold of its own. An updated version of the policy was published on 21 February 2024 to implement the Registration Data Policy, so the current text is what governs.

    Does the extension change anything?

    It changes what a visitor expects, and it changes nothing about how the site resolves. The part of the name before the dot is the label the rules above govern; the extension is a separate label higher up the tree and the resolution process treats both the same way.

    On search, the only sourced statement available is the registrar’s own. Namecheap’s domain name generator page states that search engines, like Google, consider all domains equal. This page reports that as Namecheap’s statement and extends it no further, because no study on the question was confirmed during the research for this page.

    One consideration no ranking page raises comes from a user rather than a vendor: a commenter in 2024 described checking the political situation of a country before building on its country-code extension, on the reasoning that the registry sits under that country’s control. That is a user’s own rule and is recorded as one.

    What makes a website name good?
