A GitHub username is the login string that becomes your profile URL on github.com and the account name other people mention, invite and search for. This page groups 210 GitHub usernames by how each one was built, then states what GitHub’s own Username Policy and rename documents actually say, including the part Google’s overview gets wrong: git config user.name is not your GitHub username.
The ranking set for this query is how-to and policy, not a wall of labelled name buckets. GitHub’s Username Policy page says account names are first-come, first-served and intended for immediate and active use. GitHub’s Username changes page says that after a rename your old username becomes available for anyone else to claim, that repository redirects can stop working, and that old profile links return 404. GitHub’s “Setting your username in Git” page states in its opening paragraph that the Git username is not the same as your GitHub username. Those three documents are the reason this page is organised the way it is.
The generator asks a language model for up to ten names in the tone selected, caches each of its seven tones so a tone already generated returns instantly, and refreshes its canonical set on a cadence. It does not check whether a username is taken on GitHub. It does enforce GitHub’s published character rule: lower-case letters, digits and single interior hyphens only, at most 39 characters, with no leading, trailing or doubled hyphen.

What is a GitHub username?
A GitHub username is the unique account name on a personal or managed user account. GitHub’s own “Types of GitHub accounts” page states that every person who uses GitHub signs in to a user account, and that the user account “is your identity on GitHub and has a username and profile”.
Three different strings get called a name on GitHub, and only one of them is this page’s subject.
- GitHub username
- The account login. It appears in
https://github.com/<username>, in repository paths, in @mentions and in many API payloads. It is unique across GitHub and it is what this page generates. - Profile display name
- The optional name shown on your profile page. It is not unique, it is not the URL, and changing it does not rename your repositories.
- Git commit name (
user.name) - The local Git identity string attached to commits. GitHub’s own documentation states that this Git username is not the same as your GitHub username. Setting it does not rename your account.
If you confuse the three, you will either rename the wrong thing or follow recovery advice that cannot find your account. The next sections keep them separate on purpose.
How does a GitHub username generator work?
A GitHub username generator proposes candidate account names in a chosen tone and returns them a handful at a time. This page’s generator returns up to ten names per tone, caches each tone separately, and refreshes its canonical set on a cadence of roughly three and a half days.
Two limits matter more here than on a joke-handle page. It does not check availability on github.com, because that check needs a live lookup against GitHub’s account registry. It does not invent platform rules: every name it returns is forced through the character pattern GitHub publishes, so a suggestion with an underscore, a period or a leading hyphen never leaves the tool.
GitHub name generator is the same job under a shorter label. The output is still a candidate username, not a repository name and not a commit author string.

What does GitHub’s Username Policy actually say?
GitHub’s Username Policy page, read on 13 September 2026, opens with a single sentence that most generator pages never quote: “GitHub account names are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and are intended for immediate and active use.”
Four rules follow from that document, and each one changes how you choose a name.
- Taken means taken, even when the account looks quiet. The same page states that not all activity is publicly visible, and that GitHub does not accept requests to release, transfer or reclaim usernames because they appear inactive or unused.
- Trademark complaints are the only release path GitHub reviews for a claimed name. If you do not hold a trademark, the Policy tells you to pick a different available name.
- Name squatting is prohibited. Accounts may not be reserved or inactively held for future use, and attempts to sell, buy or solicit payment for account names may result in permanent suspension.
- Variations are the supported escape hatch. When a name is claimed, the Policy suggests a number, a hyphen or an alternative spelling rather than a reclaim request.
That last point is why the hyphenated and ideas groups above exist. A DEV Community post from January 2020 describes recovering a desired name by reporting inactivity under an older reading of the squatting policy; a later comment on that same post points readers back to the current Username Policy and notes that reclaiming a taken username on inactivity is no longer the path. The Policy page is the document that decides the question today.
What happens when you change a GitHub username?
You can change a GitHub username to another username that is not currently in use. GitHub’s Username changes page states the consequences in order.
- Your old username becomes claimable immediately. After the change, anyone else may register it.
- Most repository references redirect. Web links to existing repositories continue to work for a time, and command-line pushes to old remote URLs continue to work.
- Redirects are not permanent ownership. If the new owner of your old username creates a repository with the same name as one of yours, that overrides the redirect and the redirect stops working. GitHub therefore recommends updating every remote repository URL after a rename.
- Old profile links 404. Links such as
https://github.com/previoususernamestop resolving. Update LinkedIn, X and resume links yourself. - Gist URLs change and old gist links 404.
- CODEOWNERS files that name the old username need a manual edit.
- Some commits signed with a GitHub-provided noreply address can lose Verified status or drop off the contributions graph, depending on whether the address used the
ID+USERNAME@users.noreply.github.comform. GitHub’s Username reference page states those limits in detail.
The how-to is short: profile picture, Settings, Account, Change username, read the warnings, type the new name, confirm if it is available. The cost sits in the bullets above, not in the clicks.
Is git config user.name your GitHub username?
No. GitHub’s own page “Setting your username in Git” states: “The Git username is not the same as your GitHub username.”
Google’s AI Overview for this query tells a locked-out reader to run git config user.name or git config --global user.name to recover a forgotten GitHub handle. That command prints the local commit author string, which can be any text, including a real name that was never your account login. The overview’s other recovery tip, git remote -v, is the useful half: the remote URL contains the account or organisation segment that actually identifies the GitHub namespace.
Use the three-name distinction from the top of this page. Change user.name when you want different commit attribution. Change the GitHub username only when you intend to rename the account and accept the redirect and claimability consequences.
What characters can a GitHub username use?
GitHub’s own documentation states that usernames “can only contain alphanumeric characters and dashes” and “must not exceed 39 characters”, and that a normalized username cannot start or end with a dash and cannot contain two consecutive dashes. Those rules were read from GitHub’s documentation on 13 September 2026 and match the character rule already stated site-wide on the developer-nickname page.
| Constraint | What GitHub’s documentation states |
|---|---|
| Maximum length | Must not exceed 39 characters |
| Allowed characters | Alphanumeric characters and dashes (-) only |
| Leading or trailing dash | Not allowed on a normalized username |
| Consecutive dashes | Not allowed on a normalized username |
| Periods and underscores | Not part of the allowed set; a period in a suggested pattern such as doe.j is not a legal GitHub username as typed |
Every name in the seven groups above was built to those rules and lower-cased. None of them is availability-checked.
How do you choose between GitHub username candidates?
Run six checks in this order and stop at the first failure.
- Match the character table. If the string needs a period, an underscore or a doubled hyphen, discard it before you fall in love with it.
- Say it on a call. A username is spoken in reviews and standups. If two colleagues stress it differently, it is already two names.
- Open
https://github.com/<name>. A profile page means taken. A 404 means free at that moment only. - Read it on a CV line. Happy Git and GitHub for the useR advises picking a username you will be comfortable revealing to a future boss. Profanity and juvenile jokes fail this check even when they are legal.
- Drop employer and university tokens. The same Happy Git chapter warns against highlighting a current school, employer or place of residence, because those date the account.
- Prefer a name you can keep. Renaming later makes the old username claimable and can break profile links, gist links and redirects. First-choice cost is lower than rename cost.
Keep it legal under GitHub’s character rule: letters, digits and single interior hyphens only, 39 characters or fewer.
Check the live profile URL yourself: no generator on this query, including this one, can see GitHub’s registry.
Assume a rename is expensive: GitHub’s own rename documents describe claimability and broken redirects, not a free cosmetic edit.
Frequently asked questions about GitHub usernames
Eight questions drawn from the People Also Ask set and from the forum-shaped chips on the captured SERP for 13 September 2026, each rephrased rather than copied.
What are good GitHub usernames?
Good GitHub usernames are short enough to say aloud, legal under GitHub’s character rule, and boring enough to put on a CV. The professional, short and hyphenated groups above are built for that standard; a name that needs explaining in an interview is already failing.
Should a GitHub username be your real name?
It can be, and Treehouse’s community answer recommended a real name or an existing Twitter handle for professionalism. It does not have to be. GitHub’s Policy cares about availability and active use, not about legal-name matching. If your full name is taken, the names and ideas groups show compression and initials patterns that stay professional without inventing a joke handle.
Do employers care about a GitHub username?
They care when the username is hard to take seriously on a hiring packet. Google’s overview tip for this query is to avoid profanity, juvenile jokes and highly divisive political phrases. The Workplace Stack Exchange thread the overview cites was removed for moderation by 13 September 2026, so this page does not quote it; the practical test that remains is whether you would paste the profile URL into an application form without editing it first.
Can you change a GitHub username later?
Yes. GitHub’s changing-username how-to walks through Settings, Account and Change username. The Username changes page states that the old username then becomes available for anyone else to claim, and that some links will not redirect.
What if the GitHub username I want looks inactive?
GitHub’s Username Policy states that accounts with no visible activity may still be in active use, and that GitHub does not accept requests to release names on that basis. Trademark complaints are the only release requests the Policy says GitHub reviews. Pick a variation instead.
Is a GitHub nickname different from a GitHub username?
In search language, people use both phrases for the same account login. On the platform itself, the username is the unique login string; a nickname in ordinary speech is just that login when it is not a legal name. This page’s github nickname group is still a set of legal usernames, not a second account field.
Does a GitHub username generator check if a name is free?
No, and this one does not either. Availability lives inside GitHub’s account registry. Open the profile URL to see whether a page loads.
Can a GitHub username contain a period?
No as a typed username. GitHub’s documentation allows alphanumeric characters and dashes only. A pattern such as doe.j fails that rule; GitHub’s normalization examples convert periods to dashes when they appear in other identity systems, which is not the same as accepting a period in the username you register.
Three neighbouring decisions sit on live pages. The developer-nickname problem across GitHub, GitLab and npm, including the intersection character set, is worked through on the generate hacker name page. The privacy case for a handle that encodes nothing about you is the whole subject of the random username generator page. And the Discord-side username and display-name split, where the platform rules differ again, is on the Discord names page. In each case the same order holds: generate a legal candidate, then check the live profile, then treat a rename as a last resort rather than a styling pass.
